Level 2 EV Charger Install
EV CHARGER Location:
Consider the location for your Level 2 home charger. Ideally you want it as close to your normal parking area as possible. Obviously inside your garage and near your electrical panel is the most affordable option but if you routinely park outside, you should install the charger on the exterior wall. If your parking area is away from your house or garage, consider a pedestal installation. Pedestal installation will require trenching to run power out to the parking area.
Hardwired or Plug-in EV Chargers:
We recommend hard wiring all EV Chargers. There are a few plug-in models available however hardwiring is a much safer alternative. We recommend 50amp chargers for most homes and they require 240volt connection on a dedicated circuit.
Power Requirements and Panel Space:
EV Charger Installation requires a significant amount of power (50amps) so homeowners will need to check their existing service and consider where the electrical panel is located and if it has available space to add a dedicated circuit for the EV Charger.
Load Shedding:
In some cases, you may need to consider installing a load shedding device in conjunction with the EV Charger. This is more common for shared areas like townhomes and condominiums, or as an alternative to a service upgrade. Load Shedding involves temporarily reducing or cutting off power to the charger when the main electrical panel is approaching capacity. This avoids tripping breakers and potential damage to devices. When the load is reduced, full power is restored to the EV Charger.
Permitting and Inspections:
Installing a home EV Charger with require a permit from your local municipality. Dynamic Electric is happy to coordinate this and in general the permit and inspection process is simple for an EV Charger.
Selecting a Charger:
The majority of our customers purchase their EV Charger and have us do the installation and electrical work. Most electric vehicle chargers are universal and use a SAE J1772 plug for Level 1 and 2 charging, the notable exception is Tesla which has a proprietary plug. Your car manufacturer may have recommendations, but EV chargers are widely available for purchase online.
